Mourning Becomes Electra logo

Mourning Becomes Electra

by Eugene O'Neill

directed by Mike Haddad

Murder. Adultery. Revenge. Mourning Becomes Electra retells one of the most famous Greek tragedies, Aeschylus's the Oresteia, set in Civil-War-era New England. The play focuses on the Mannons and the tumultuous history that casts a dark shadow over General Ezra Mannon, his wife Christine, and his children Lavinia and Orin. When Lavinia uncovers her mother's murderous intents toward Ezra, she takes drastic action to protect her father and begins her own descent into evil, despair, and mourning.

Director: Mike Haddad has been teaching Latin and Ancient Greek in Lynn for the past 14 years. During that time, he has enjoyed an active life acting, directing, and writing in and around the Boston theater scene. His last major directorial project was Theater@First's presentation of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap. He has also directed Shakespeare's The Tempest (Hovey Players), Titus Andronicus (MIT Shakespeare Ensemble), and Hamlet (Boston University). He got his start as a director working for several years at Bentley, directing a staged adaptation of the Breakfast Club, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Simon's Rumors, and co-directing Picasso at the Lapine Agile and Jesus Christ Superstar. Over the years, he has also directed several shows at his high school with students from the Latin Club, which include Antigone, the Orestia Trilogy, Medea, and Shakespeare's Coriolanus. In addition, he has directed over twenty-five short plays for various festivals.
